Nani Update

Between facebook, random calls, an over abundance of plectrons and scanners in Matawan, and just "The Great Vine" in general, I'm sure a lot of you have heard about the ambulances at my grandmother's house this week. So here's the quick & dirty update on what happened:

Thursday afternoon, while my father and I were both at her house, my grandmother became ill. We called for an ambulance and she was taken to the Bayshore ER. After tons of tests, a second major scare, and literally 30 hours of waiting, we found out that she had an ulcer that had started bleeding. Once discovered, treatment was immediately started, and she started improving almost immediately. She was finally moved late Friday out of the ER to a bed in the Telemetry Unit (ICU-lite), and today (Sun) moved down to a "regular" bed. She spent 2 days on IV only, Sat on clear liquids, and today she got real food (I've never heard anyone so excited about hospital cafeteria string beans). The doctors are hanging on to her to make sure her stomach takes the food well, but if all goes according to plan it looks like she'll be home around the middle of the week. All the nurses love her and she's the envy of the floor because of all the visitors and cards and such. One of our friends who does balloon animals even made her this huge bouquet of balloon flowers. All the family is gathering as well, coming in shifts over the next few weeks. A pleasant result of an unfortunate reason.

All in all, things are looking good. Thanks for the well-wishes and all - you know who you are.

Later!

two down, thirteen to go

So here I am. About two weeks into my first semester as an adjunct. My mother cheerily announced to me this weekend "Well, you've got two down. Now there's only thirteen to go!"

Fantastic.

"Summer of Love" at Whitney

Oooo...two in a row. Maybe I really am back. We'll see how long it lasts. Anyway...

Sunday my parents & I went to NYC. We drove in to Port Authority, walked through Central Park, and stopped at Ikea on the way home. Our main reason was to go to the Whitney to see their exhibit Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era. It was phenomenal. Amazing. And so much fun. The audio tour was a soundtrack of songs from the time. A huge part of the exhibit was a collection of posters, mostly from the Filmore & Filmore East. They were so cool. My parents were standing there trying to find concerts they'd been to. There were also a bunch of movies and light shows, created by some of the best of the time. My father & I went into one ("Lapis" by James Whitney), watch for a second, and then he turns to me and says "This would be so much better if you were on drugs." I swear. It was great. I almost died right in the middle of the museum, it was so funny. There were other interactive pieces as well. I think my favorite was "Phantasy Landscape Visiona II" by Verner Panton. It was a big room that was upholstered and had all these great curves and bumps that made seats & beds & shelves & stuff. Awesome. And you were allowed to get in and climb around. It rocked. All in all, a good day.
Tuesday I had an interview at Middlesex County College, and was given an algebra class. So now I'm up to three classes, and that means a lot of lesson plans. So that's basically my next few weeks - lesson plans and more lesson plans. Fun. Still better than the work I would have in a high school. Definitely thinking this was a good idea, taking college positions. I'd be dying if I were trying to do 25 lessons a week.
Anyway, back to work.

Later.

I'm Back...

So, I'm sitting in the living room of my new apartment, trying to work on lesson plans for my new job teaching at Brookdale, and watching a show about the upcoming Rutgers Football Team. It's amazing to me how much interest there is in Rutgers now that we've had a winning season. New York has claimed Rutgers as "their" college team. Whatever. The first game is next week. I've heard the whole season is sold out already. We'll see. Maybe I'll get to one...homecoming or something.

So yeah. Where am I now. Ash & I moved to Plainsboro in June, though if you know me well enough to actually read this, you probably knew that already. Maybe some stuff not everyone knows yet.... We have a cat. Her name is Pi. She has two different colored eyes, purrs at the slightest touch, and will do absolutely anything to get brushed. I have a job for the upcoming semester, being a part-time professor at Brookdale. I'm teaching the two lowest math classes they offer - 011 & 012, but I'm still kind of excited about it. I'm kind of taking it as a second student teaching turn.... Extra time to figure out if teaching full time is really my thing or not. I also have an interview for another adjunct position next week. Depending on how that goes, that might be it for a few months. Oh, and some occasional subbing for extra cash. That'll be more than enough work. I'm still slated to make an appearance as the Tech Director for Matawan next spring. Not quite what I was promised, but I knew he wouldn't really give me both positions. Promised them last year too; didn't get them then either. No reason this year should be any different really.

Well, I think that's good for a little welcome back update thing. I'm def going to try to keep up, but we'll see how it goes.

Night all.
